When Molly started thinking about a Herschede T-shirt, she started with me. More specifically, with the things she thought mattered to me.
Anyone who spends much time at Herschede knows music is part of the place. It always has been part of my life. So the centerpiece became a turntable and a record. And because, if forced to choose, British alternative is probably the music that feels most like me, a Union Jack found its way behind it.
In the middle of the record is the Herschede mansion in Cincinnati. I’m distantly related to that branch of the family, and that connection matters to me. There’s history there, but also relationships, depth and a sense of community. Things that found their way into what I want Herschede to become here in Phoenix.
Molly took all of that and made a T-shirt.
What I find interesting is that I didn’t.
I spend an absurd amount of time thinking about clothes, what they say and how they make us feel. Yet one of the most personal things in my store was designed by someone else.
Maybe the people who know us best occasionally see things we don’t.
We think of personal style as something we create deliberately. But maybe it’s also the accumulation of everything that gets under our skin along the way. People we love. Places we remember. Music we never stopped listening to. Things we discover, inherit or simply can’t explain liking.
Over time, they leave clues.
And sometimes it takes someone else to put the clues together.
Molly looked at mine and somehow came back with a record player, a British flag and an old house in Cincinnati.
Then she put my name across the middle.
I couldn’t have designed a more personal T-shirt myself.
